Blue-grey botanical mandala tattoo of a large flower with scrolled leaves, sitting on the wrist of a person wearing a white top.

Blue-grey floral mandala on a wrist

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A circular floral design with a large central bloom surrounded by scrolled leaves and curled foliage. The linework is fine and dark, with soft shading in the petals that gives depth. The ink is a single blue-grey tone against pale skin, and the tattoo sits neatly on the wrist with a gold ring visible on the hand below.

Dear Nell,

You will laugh, but I have finally managed a rose that Mr Okonedo does not send back to the kiln. It took me until March. The trick, he says, is to load the brush with cobalt and then wipe most of it away on the rag, so the petals come out pale in the middle and dark only at the edges, like a bloom seen through fog. I have been doing it all week on the seconds at the back of the works, the plates nobody will buy, and I think the ones I did on Tuesday are the first things I have made that I would hang on a wall.

Mother still writes asking when I will come home to Hadlow and find a proper husband, but the pottery takes the whole of the day and I like the smell of the turps and the wet clay. Mrs Pryce at the counter says the dark blue scrolls sell faster than anything else we make, the ones like ferns curling round a centre. She said a man from the council bought four for his sister's wedding and paid without haggling, which I have decided is the highest praise a plate can get.

Only yesterday the kiln cracked a whole shelf of them. I stood in the yard with a dustpan and felt quite ill, until Mr Okonedo came out with his pipe and turned over one shard in his palm. He said the break had run exactly along the line of a petal, and that the blue had held better than the white, which meant I had done it right after all. He gave me the shard. It is in this envelope, so mind the edges.

Love, and write back soon, Margaret
