Black ornamental floral tattoo on stomach

Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo covers the abdomen and is built from several large ornamental flowers, with a central bloom above the navel and smaller blooms to either side. Paisley-like swirls and fine scrolling detail fill the gaps and curve towards the hips. The linework is fine and dense, with solid black areas and some light grey shading, and the design appears on bare skin with no other colour.

Dear Win, The master wants the Lady's Bloom pattern redrawn by Friday, and I have spent three nights with a lamp and a stack of tracing paper trying to make the central flower sit above the swell of the design without swallowing the scrolls either side. Mr Achterberg says the eye should land on the middle first and then wander outwards, the way it does in a garden at dusk, but my paisley curls keep wandering off the edge of the sheet altogether.

Yesterday I found the old drawer under the frame room bench. Mother's pattern book is in there, the one she kept before she went to the mill in Sneinton, with every flower numbered in pencil and a little note beside the largest one: 'hold the line, let the black do the work.' I copied it out the way she did, three petals, a dot, then the hook curling inwards like a fern about to unroll. My hand shook at the hooks, and I had to start again twice.

When I finally laid the new sheet beside hers, the two were nearly the same, except mine had a small flaw at the lower left where the scroll runs into the bloom. I left it. Mr Achterberg looked at it for a long while this morning and said nothing, which from him is praise. He pinned it to the wall beside the window where the sun comes in at seven.

Come home at Easter if you can. I'll show you the flaw, and you can tell me whether it's a mistake or the only true thing on the page. Your loving sister, Ada.
