When the lace came off the counter it was symmetrical, and damp, and heavier than it looked. She folded it into a biscuit tin and set the kettle on again. Drury took his tea black and left the tin on the table, and by the time the watch changed the blossoms had dried stiff and sure, and nobody on deck asked what the heart was for.
