Black rose and white snakes on a forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black silhouetted rose with stem and leaves sits across the forearm, wrapped by pale snakes rendered in fine dotted white ink. Three small outlined geometric shapes with thin black linework sit above the rose on the left and right. The composition is black on a light skin tone, with the white snakes giving a lace-like texture against the dense black fill.

The toll-keeper at Sallow Bridge had a rule about the snakes. They came up out of the reeds each night, pale as lace, and wound the gate posts and the rail, and anyone who wanted to cross had to pay them in something they had not yet spent.

A man came in the wet month of March carrying a black rose wrapped in oilcloth. He said it had been cut from a garden on the far bank, a garden that no longer belonged to anyone. Mirela asked for his name, as her father had taught her, and he would not give it. He said names were the first toll every border took, and he had paid enough of them already.
She looked at the rose. Its petals were black as wet slate, and its stem had three small thorns shaped like folded paper stars. The snakes lifted their heads from the posts and watched it the way a cat watches a bird that has stopped moving. Mirela understood then that the rose was not a bribe. It was a debt, carried a long way to be settled by someone who was not afraid of the reeds.
She lifted the barrier. The snakes slid down into the water one by one, and the man stepped onto the boards and did not look back. In the morning the rose lay on the bridge with a new leaf growing from its stem, and Mirela kept it in the toll box beside the coins she had never been told to count.
