Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an outlined open hand with a sprig of small, round-budded flowers rising up from the fingers. The linework is thin and even, with a few dots marking the knuckles and no shading. The design is in black ink on pale skin, set against a plain white wall and a white top.

The ferry from Mallow Quay left at six, so my mother was up before the gulls, pinning a sprig of sea lavender to the lapel of my coat with the same hand she used for everything, fingers open and flat as if she were measuring the air for rain. I was nineteen and certain I knew which way the weather would turn.

She had grown the lavender along the wall of the chandlery yard, where the salt came over in the night and nothing else would take. Every boat that went out carried a bit of it, she said, so the men would know the land had not forgotten them. Dad had gone out on the Brightwater in March and not come back, and she had never once said his name without picking something from that wall first.
On the quay I tried to give it back. She folded my fingers over the stems and shook her head. 'Keep the hand open,' she said, 'or nothing comes in.' I laughed at her, and then I didn't, because a gust took the buds clean off the stalk and scattered them across the cobbles like spilt pepper.
When I looked back from the rail, she was standing where I had left her, one palm held out flat to the water. I kept my own hand open all the way to the headland, and by the time the town was a grey smudge behind us I had stopped feeling the cold in it.
