Black rose tattoo on forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large black rose sits on the outer forearm, with a closed bud on the left, layered petals and dark leaves along a thorned stem. The solid black ink has bold outlines and white highlights in the petals, with little or no grey shading. The rose fills most of the frame against a plain white wooden background, and a partial banner tattoo is visible at the top edge.

Sit down, sit down, and mind the tea, it's stewed. You want to hear about the rose on the fourteenth floor of Ashgrove House, the one nobody could scrub off the lift wall. Nobody painted it there, mind. It came up through the paint the winter the boiler failed, black as a burnt match, with its bud still shut tight like it knew what the cold was for.

Mrs Okonedo on twelve swore it was the damp. Her husband Felix, who fixed televisions in the arcade on the ground floor, said it was a bloom that drank the warmth out of the pipes and that was why the flats above went chilly. He had a theory about everything, did Felix, and he was usually half right. He took a lighter to it once, out of spite, and the petals curled back and the thorns went white, and the whole block smelled of pennies for a week.
Then in March a girl called Sunita came up from the bus station with a bag of library books and a broken umbrella. She stood in that lift and looked at the rose the way you'd look at a letter from someone you used to love, and she said, very quiet, that it was only waiting for someone to stop pretending the stem wasn't theirs to carry. Then the lift doors opened on fourteen and she walked off, and the rose was gone from the wall by morning. Only the bud was left, on the outside of the lift door, where the paint had cracked. You can still see it if you know where to look.
