Black rose tattoos across a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two sections of rose tattoos run along the forearm, one above and one below a blank band of skin bordered by thin black lines. The roses are drawn with bold outlines, with stippled dot shading in the petals and fine leaves and buds on thin stems. The work is entirely black ink in greys, with the blank band and the surrounding skin giving the composition a clean, banded structure.

He kept a band clear between them, a strip of nothing, and when I asked why he said it was so the two halves could breathe apart without losing one another, which I thought was a lot of talk from a man with a biro behind his ear.

The lower roses went on in the second sitting. The bud by the wrist he shaded with tiny dots, thousands of them, so it looks like frost on a window. I keep turning the arm to the lamp to see them. Mum asked if it hurt and I said no more than the hot water bottle she used to put on my ankles, which made her laugh into her cardigan.
So come on the Saturday, bring the blue dish you promised, and sit where you can see the empty band. Tell me honestly whether it looks like a gap or a door. I cannot decide and you always could.
Love, Rose
