Black symbol with pink flowers and vines on back

Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a thick black stylised symbol with looped curls at its top, with two pink-red flowers, each with five petals and a pale centre, attached to it. Fine black vines with spiral tendrils extend from the flowers and the base of the design. The black areas are solid and slightly textured, while the flowers use soft pink and red shading, and the design is centred on the upper back below the neck.

The name badges had been printed with the wrong year, so Ruth spent the first hour peeling hers off and sticking it to the edge of a trestle table. Across the function room, Colin Abbott was holding a warm lager he hadn't touched, looking at the buffet as if it had personally let him down. They had not spoken since the summer they left Vale Grammar, but the years dropped away the moment he said, "Hebden still owes us a wheelbarrow."

The school garden had been their project for the Lower Sixth, a bed shaped like a great wooden V that the woodwork teacher had cut from larch and painted green every April. Ruth and Colin had filled its arms with sweet peas, and the sweet peas had climbed the letter and flowered pink. Mr Hebden spent the whole of the Easter term trying to dig out the bindweed that followed them, and he never once forgave the curls.

They walked out after the speeches, past the car park where the old annexe had been turned into flats. Behind the new sports hall, propped against a wheelie bin, was the letter itself, grey as driftwood, its paint gone, the tendrils of bindweed still threaded through the gaps in its slats as if no one had ever pulled them out.

Colin crouched and rubbed a thumb along the soft wood. Ruth took a crumpled seed packet from her handbag, the sweet pea kind, three years out of date and still rattling. She pressed a few seeds into the cracked soil at the foot of the V and said nothing, and Colin, after a moment, found a stone to hold the packet down.
