Heart of two figures with pink flowers on upper back

Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two dark, stylised figures whose bodies curve together to form a heart shape, surrounded by swirling black vines. Three pink and purple flowers, resembling lilies, sit at the lower left and right of the heart. The linework is bold and solid with some flat black fill, and the flowers are coloured in pink with purple shading against lighter skin.

Now sit closer, because the old wall of Carrow Vale has ears, and it likes to listen to the wrong stories. You want the tale of Ysolde Marrin and the boy who mended the bridge rails, and I'll tell it the way my grandmother told it to me, with the lamp turned low.

Ysolde kept the orchard above the mill, and every harvest the lilies came up wild between the apple roots, pink as a fingernail and twice as stubborn. The boy, Tobiah Cray, climbed the hill each morning with his tools and his pockets full of iron nails, and each morning he found the rails had been bent overnight. Nobody had seen who did it. Nobody in Carrow Vale ever did see, which is how you know a thing is witchery.

It was Ysolde, of course. She bent the rails so he would climb the hill, and he, being slow in the way of men who are only quick with their hands, never once asked why. He mended them anyway, and he left her a nail each time, bright and new, on the gatepost. By the first frost she had a little heap of them on the sill, and she could not bring herself to throw them out.

So in the spring, when the vines came back thick and black along the wall, she wove them into a heart with two figures inside it, one leaning in and one reaching out, and she pinned the lilies at either side so the heart would never be empty. The next morning the rails were straight, the gate was open, and Tobiah was sitting on the wall with a nail in his fist, waiting for her to come out and tell him what she had done.
