Black tribal band across the lower abdomen

Blackwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A shirtless torso is cropped below the chest and above the thighs, showing a single sweeping black tribal band that curves across the lower abdomen and rises towards the hip. The solid black shapes have tapering, curled ends and a few thin lines of unshaded skin running through them. The image is in black and grey against a dark background, with a dark blue waistband and jeans visible below the tattoo.

The swell comes up under the stern before the light does, long and grey and unhurried, and by the time Dunnet shouts from the wheelhouse you have already felt it through your boots. Three days out of Peterhead and the sea has been heaving itself into a shape you can't name, a ridge that rolls in from the east and breaks only when it reaches the hull. The skipper calls it the lazy one. It takes its time.

The trawl comes up at noon with a hole the size of a dinner plate torn in its belly. Nobody says anything. You sit on an upturned fish box with the net across your knees and a netting needle in your fist, drawing twine through the mesh in the looping hitch your grandfather showed you, and the loops curl over and back on themselves, thinning at their ends the way a wave thins when it has nothing left to push. Behind you, Jonah from the galley leans on the rail with a mug of tea going cold and asks whether it's true you're getting off at the next landing.

You say yes. You say it while you tie off the last knot, pull it tight with your teeth, and cut the spare with the blade you've carried for nineteen years. He doesn't argue. He just watches the rope go over the side, uncoil, and run out astern where the wake folds back on itself in dark curls, each one racing the boat and losing.

When the net goes back down, you go below and sleep, and dream of nothing but the swell, lifting you slow and setting you down somewhere you have never been.
