Black geometric armband tattoo on a forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm near the wrist carries a band of black ink made from solid stripes and a panel of fine interlocking geometric lines. The linework is crisp and the solid black bands are dense and even, with no shading beyond the ink itself. The image is a close, dimly lit shot against a black background, with the hand and a ring visible at the lower edge.

The snow had sealed the Hollin Cross road by Tuesday, and by Thursday Mrs Pask had stopped pretending the inn had a second cook. I did the bread and the ledgers. The ledgers were the harder job. Every guest who came in off the moor signed the book, and every guest had to be measured against the room they were given, because the old stove only warmed the two rooms nearest the chimney.

The surveyor came on the Wednesday with a leather case of brass dividers and a roll of tracing paper. He would not say what he was surveying. He sat by the window every evening and drew the frost. Not the view, the frost itself, the fern patterns crawling up the glass, copied onto paper in a tight grid of fine lines. Then he took a pen and inked two thick bands across the page, one above the other, and fitted the lattice between them like a strap holding a cuff closed.
"Why bands?" I asked him, setting down his tea.
He turned the paper so I could see. "Everything that is measured needs a limit," he said. "Without the bands the lines just wander off the edge of the world."
On the Friday the thaw came in a single night, and the surveyor was gone before light, leaving the drawing pinned to the back of the door. I took it down. The lattice fitted the bands exactly, and in one corner, where the frost had melted, he had left a gap of white paper and written a single figure: the number of rooms, the number of guests, and a line struck through it. I never learned what he had been counting.
