Black wash flower on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A tattoo of a loose flower bloom with a long, tapering stem that runs down towards the wrist. The petals are built from soft grey washes and dark ink with pale gaps left in the skin, giving a painterly, watercolour-like effect. The flower sits centrally on a pale forearm against a dark, blurred background.

At half past three the bakery is the only lit window on Harbour Row, and I like it that way. Flour hangs in the air like breath on a cold pane. I was working the first batch of rye when Gran's old tin of Chinese ink slid off the shelf and split across the floor, a black pool that ran between the proving racks and settled into the tiles.

I should have mopped it. Instead I knelt with a rag and watched the ink spread in a loose bloom, dark at its heart where it had pooled and thinning to grey at the edges. It drew a thin stalk toward the drain, then stopped as if it had changed its mind. Gran would have called it a sign. She called most things signs, usually when she wanted the kettle on.
Dawn came up grey over the sea wall. I took the stencil brush and the tin of cocoa dust and finished the loaves for the six o'clock van. On the last tray I brushed a single rose across a cob, dark where the dust settled and pale where it skipped over the crust. Mr Okafor from the café next door came in for his order and stopped at the counter. He asked what it was. I told him it was the morning's first poppy and that it would cost him extra.
He laughed and paid. When I cleaned up later the stain had dried into a shape I could not scrub out, so I left it. Every morning since I have stepped around it in my clogs, and every morning it looks a little more like something that means to grow.
