Rose with thorned stem on an ankle

Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey rose sits on the outside of the ankle, with its stem curving down and across the leg. The petals are shaded with dense stippling and fine lines, while the stem, thorns and leaves are drawn with crisp, clean outlines. The plain background and soft natural light keep the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hedge along the lower field had been left to itself since my grandfather died, so by the time the frost came in January it had grown into a tangle taller than the gate. Dad said we'd burn the lot after Candlemas. I took the secateurs down there on the Sunday anyway, pulling my gloves off with my teeth because the cold made my fingers stupid.

The rose was a dog rose, pale and loose in summer, and it had gone to hip and then to nothing, just bare grey canes with thorns hooked like cat claws. Most of it I left. One long cane arched out over the ditch, dark and green at the join, and I cut it near the root and dragged it up the slope with the gate chain rattling behind me. Nobody had told me that wood keeps its colour under the bark longer than you'd think.

In the kitchen I stood it in a jug of rainwater on the windowsill, leaves stripped, thorns left on so the cat wouldn't go near it. Mum came in, looked at it, said nothing, and put the kettle on. The bare stem looked like a drawing someone had made in pencil and then pressed too hard. After a fortnight, with the radiator knocking and the fields white outside, a single bud at the tip had swelled and split into a closed fist of pink.

It opened on the morning Dad finally lit the fire in the hedge. I smelt the smoke before I saw it. I carried the jug to the table and watched the petals loosen one at a time, crumpled as if they had been folded away for years, and I did not move until the smoke from the hedge had reached the glass.
