Black wave band tattoo on a calf

Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black band of stylised waves wraps fully around the calf, with two curling wave rows separated by bare skin stripes. The linework is bold and solid, filled with black ink and no shading. The band sits centred on the lower leg, with the rest of the calf, a rolled jeans hem and white socks visible around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Teina had carved the same wave for three weeks before Uncle Mataio let him near the hull. "Again," the old man said each morning, flicking a curl of breadfruit wood off the paddle with his thumb. The shape was simple enough: a crest that rolled over on itself, a smaller curl locked inside it, then a stripe of bare wood the width of two fingers. "The sea never repeats itself," Mataio said, "but it always comes back to the same shape."

The morning the reef turned white and the boats stayed on the sand, Teina walked the shore with a pot of soot and a bone stylus. The families in the village marked their men this way before the long passages out, one band around the leg, so the water would know them coming home. He sat on an upturned canoe and worked the first row slowly, the ink dark and solid, no shading, each curl joined to the next until the line closed where it began. His cousin complained about the cold stone. Teina told him to hold still or the wave would come out crooked.

Eleven years later the canoes came back through a grey squall, and Teina stood in the shallows counting them in. The first man ashore had the band on his leg, black crests washed pale by salt but still turning in their proper order. Behind him another fisherman climbed onto the sand with a wave wrapped around his calf that Teina had never drawn, the stripes a little out of step, as if a different hand had found the same shape from the other side of the sea.

Teina knelt and laid his palm flat on the wet sand where the tide had just drawn back. The next wave curled in, broke, and folded itself into the pattern it had always made.
