Black tribal armband on upper arm

Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A bold band of black tribal motifs wraps fully around the upper arm, built from spirals, scrolls and a central circular motif. The linework is solid black with no shading, and the pattern repeats in a continuous band. The photograph is taken close up against a plain blue background, with the band centred across the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the lot of you, the wind comes through this canvas like a debt collector and I'd rather you didn't blow away before the end. This is about Oswin Pell, who carried the company's last strongman's band up and down the dusty roads of Kent for forty winters. The band was a ring of black spirals and scrolls that a woman in Margate had worked into his arm with a needle and a steady hand, and she had never once seen a circus.

The band wasn't decoration, mind. Each spiral was a town they'd played, each scroll a horse that had died on the road, and the round knot at the centre was the old pitch-peg of the ringmaster's tent, which nobody had driven into the ground since the bank took the field. When the money ran out, Oswin wouldn't sell the lion or the wagons, but he did sell the brass bell, and the ringing stopped in the square at Faversham while the bailiffs counted the chairs.

Then one wet October the generator died in the middle of the last show. Nine people sat on wet benches in the dark, and the tightrope was strung high above them with nothing to hold it but the old guy ropes. Oswin went up the rigging with a paraffin lamp clamped in his teeth, and he walked the wire the way he'd walked it at twenty, slow, arms wide, the black pattern on his arm catching the flame each time he lifted it.

The children said afterwards that the rope had been drawn in the dark, one long unbroken curl from one pole to the other. And when he reached the far side he didn't bow. He just laid his hand on the peg and the whole tent seemed to breathe out.
