Black wolf head with red eyes design
Mixed · Flash
A solid black stylised wolf head faces forward, with pointed ears, white linework outlining its features and two red almond-shaped eyes. Below the head, black tapering shapes fan out in a symmetrical, leaf-like or flame-like pattern. The image uses flat black and red fills on a plain white background with no shading.

Mo had counted the fence posts for forty miles, and by the time the headlamps caught the pale eyes at the roadside he had stopped trusting his own arithmetic. The wolf stood where the tarmac gave out to gravel, a shape so black it seemed cut from the dark rather than standing in it. Its ears were sharp as arrowheads. Two red sparks burned where its eyes should be, and he thought of the petrol gauge, then of the flare kit in the cab, then of nothing at all.

He stopped the van. The engine ticked. Nobody had told him wolves lived out here, though his nan had said plenty of things about the desert that turned out to be true, including that the cold came quicker than the heat went. The animal did not run. It turned its head, slowly, the way a man turns to read a clock, and beneath its chin the black shapes of the ground seemed to lift and lick upward like heat over a road in July.
Mo reached for the door handle, then saw the flames were not flames. They were leaves, or feathers, or the tips of something growing up out of the sand toward the wolf's mouth. The stalk of it ran down into the gravel where his headlights pooled. He thought of the diner in Tonopah where his brother had worked the grill, the menu board painted by a man who had never seen snow.
The wolf stepped back into the dark. Where it had stood, a single red seed lay on the road, warm when he picked it up, and he drove the last miles with it in his palm.
