Blackwork mandala sleeve with fern motifs
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman wearing a black vest top shows a full sleeve tattoo on her left arm, cropped below the chin so no face is visible. The design is built from symmetrical mandala-style panels, diamond shapes, scrollwork and fine repeated lines, with a central column of fern-like leaves running down the forearm. The work is rendered entirely in black ink with solid fills and detailed hatching, and the arm is set against a dark, low-lit background.

The Wardian case has rocked in the lamp room for nineteen days, and you have stopped counting how often you wipe its glass with the cuff of your coat. Mr Ashdown, the ship's surgeon, swears the ferns will not last to the Cape. You say nothing. You have watched the fronds uncurl by lantern light, slow as a clock hand, and you no longer believe that anything so slow can also be dying.

On the twenty-first night the sea goes flat as slate and the air smells of wet bark. You sit on an upturned crate with the logbook open on your knee and draw what you see through the glass: the fiddleheads coiled tight as watch springs, the leaflets fanned in pairs down a central stem. Then you ring them. A circle, a second circle, a diamond nested in the middle, until the margins of the page are dense with panels that mirror one another like the rose window in the church at home.
Mr Ashdown finds you at it near midnight. He turns the pages slowly, then asks what the patterns are meant to be. A map, you tell him, of the way home. He laughs, but he stops when he holds the case up to the lamp and sees that the newest frond has unrolled in a spiral that matches your third ring to the hair's breadth.
At the Cape they lift the case onto the quay with ropes, and a clerk asks what is inside. You open the lid. The ferns have grown into a dense, ordered rosette, leaves fanned out in perfect symmetry, and at its centre, where the diamond sits in the logbook, a single pale shoot points straight up at the sky.
