Mandala forearm tattoo in black and grey

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm carries a tattoo of large concentric mandala-style circles filled with fine geometric patterns, triangles and radiating lines. The work uses dense stippled and linear shading in black ink, with grey tones giving depth to the rings. The forearm fills the left of the frame against a dark background, with a striped top and dark trousers visible behind it.

The flour is still settling on the bench when you start scoring the first batch, and the lame blade catches at the crust the way it always does in January. Mrs Okonedo's order is twelve boules for the church hall, and she has asked, twice, for the rings. You told her the rings are only a matter of patience. You do not tell her that patience is the one thing the oven has never handed you.

Outside the window the street is still black, and the only light is the sodium glow over the bins. Dough turns under your palms until the surface goes tight as a drum. You cut from the centre outward, one circle inside another, each arc overlapping the last so the loaves will open like flowers when the steam reaches them. Your father used to say bread should look like it was thought about before it was made. He never scored a circle in his life, and he never once asked why you wanted to.

At half four the first tray goes in. The shop fills with a smell that is nothing like coffee and everything like a promise. You stand with the peel in your hands and watch the little window in the oven door, counting. The rings darken at the edges first, then the centres, and the cuts split into pale triangles that lift and catch the light.

When you pull the last loaf out at six, the sun is only a rumour over the car park. Mrs Okonedo will be here at seven. You set the boules in their cloth-lined basket, spiral side up, and wipe the blade clean. Twelve circles, every one slightly different, every one yours to explain.
