Blink-182 CD in a scalloped heart

Colour · Flash

A drawn design of a CD case with a crossed-out smiley face logo, set inside a scalloped outline heart on a pink background. The linework is bold and black, with lavender and teal fills, pink and dark dot accents, and small hatching around the heart. The text Blink-182 arches across the top and And Chill with a question mark curves along the bottom, giving a symmetrical, sticker-like composition.

The case cracked on the second night, right down the spine, so the smiley face on the front ended up with a line through its crossed-out eyes like it had been in a fight. I didn't mind. Dev had handed me the Blink-182 disc himself, wrapped in a carrier bag because he'd run out of paper, with a sticky note that said listen to track seven first and then decide. I listened to track seven in Mum's little hatchback with the heater on full and the windows steaming up, decided it was the loudest thing I had ever heard, and played it four more times.

Dev worked Saturdays at the cinema on Crown Street and smelled of popcorn butter and cold air. For three weeks we did the sort of nothing that feels enormous at seventeen: sitting on the wall outside the leisure centre, passing one earbud each across the gap between us, pretending the cold was the reason our hands kept touching. The sticker on the case had the title in a font like someone's handwriting, and I thought it was the most romantic thing that had ever happened to a plastic box.

In January the snow came in sideways and the buses stopped. Dev's mum rang our house to say he'd be stuck at the cinema overnight, and my dad, who had never once mentioned Dev, drove over in the estate car anyway with a flask of tea and a face like thunder. He sat in the front with the radio off and said nothing, which was how I knew he was pleased. Dev climbed in the back with the case in his lap, the crack taped over now with parcel tape, and asked if we could put it on.

We did. The speakers were tinny, the road was white, and the heater ticked like it was counting. Dad turned the volume up one notch, just one, and hummed under his breath all the way home. The case is in a drawer in my kitchen now, the tape gone yellow, and the smiley face still has its crossed-out eyes. Every January I catch myself humming the same chorus without meaning to.
