Small outline heart on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outline in black ink sits on the inner wrist of a bare arm. The line is even and uniform, with no shading or fill, and the heart is set against pale skin. The photograph is in black and white, with the wrist resting on an open printed book and a grey knitted sleeve at the lower right.

Dear Nell, the net came up at four with more weed than fish, so Captain Harrow shouted at the mate and the mate shouted at me, which is how most mornings go out of Lowestoft now. I am writing this on the back of the tide tables because the proper paper went overboard with Tom's tea flask on Tuesday.

Your letter came with the post boat on Thursday. I read it twice on the foredeck and once more below, by the stove, where nobody could see my face doing what it does. You said the twins have started calling the gull on the chimney Mr Pennock. I want that gull kept on the roof and out of the bread bin.
I have drawn you something small in the corner so the skipper cannot accuse me of wasting ink. It is a heart in one line with no fill, because the pencil stub is blunt and I have no paints left. Count the sides: there is only the one edge that goes round. Every time the boat rolls I trace it with my thumb and it comes out the same shape, which is more than I can say for the men.
Keep the lamp lit on the landing. We come in on the Saturday tide if the glass holds, and if it doesn't, I will swim the last mile and the gull can have the fish.
