Blossom branch across upper back
Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo
A woman seen from behind on a road holds a skateboard, showing a large tattoo of a branching cherry blossom tree that spans her upper back and reaches over one shoulder. Fine black linework forms the branches, with small red and orange blossoms filled in along them, and a small number and a single kanji character sit lower on the spine. The warm, low-angle daylight and open road make up the background, and the composition keeps the tattoo as the clear focal point.

Ines had the proving drawer open before the church clock struck five, and the kitchen smelled of yeast and the cold tiles she had scrubbed the night before. Beyond the shop window Harbour Street was still black, but the lamps had that thin yellow look that meant the sky was thinking about it. She weighed the flour for the second batch by feel, the way her grandmother had taught her in a kitchen a long way from this one.

The drawing had come in with the damp, folded into quarters inside the flour invoice. Her cousin Teo had sketched it on the back of a delivery note while he waited for a ferry: a cherry tree with its limbs thrown out sideways, as if it were reaching for a bus it had missed. Teo had never worked a day in an oven. He said blossom was just a tree deciding to be generous for a week. Ines had told him bread did not need to be generous. It needed to be patient, and it needed someone awake to watch it.
At half past five she slid the first tray into the oven and tapped the tin of rice flour on the shelf so its faded characters faced outward, the way they always did. The top of the boule on the bench had split along one side while it rose, opening into a rough pale line that looked like a branch forking. She could have scored it cleanly and sold it as it was supposed to be. Instead she set it aside on the cooling rack, dusted it with a little flour, and wrote a small card in her careful hand: Happens sometimes. Worth the wait.
