Flock of birds across a upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind stands on a sandy beach facing the sea, with a ponytail and a dark halter tie at her neck. A flock of small black bird silhouettes in flight sweeps diagonally across her upper back, rendered in solid dark ink with simple outlines. The image is in soft, muted tones with a pale sky and grey-green water, and the tattoo is the main point of detail.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The officer turns your passport over twice, as though the back might tell him what the photograph will not. Beyond the glass the coach idles, its exhaust hanging in the cold, and somewhere behind you a queue shifts its weight from one foot to the other. You have rehearsed the answers in your aunt's kitchen in Gdańsk: the purpose of the visit, the length of stay, the name of a hotel you never booked. He asks none of them. He only looks at the folded map on the counter, the coastline inked in pencil with a single line tracing the marshes.

That line is your grandmother's route, drawn from memory after the war, when she walked it with a sack of salt and a letter sewn into her coat hem. She taught you about the starlings that lift off those marshes at dusk. They do not choose a leader. Each bird watches the one beside it and turns when that bird turns, so a flock of thousands can change its mind in a single breath and still look like one thing.

The officer taps the pencil line with a blunt fingernail. "Anything to declare?" You say a jar of sea salt, which is true, and a tin of sardines, which is also true. He stamps the page with a sound like a small door closing, then hesitates before handing the passport back, and for a moment you think he will ask about the letter. He does not. He only nods towards the gate.

Outside, the air smells of diesel and rain. Above the car park the starlings come over the rooftops in a dark sheet, bending when the wind bends, sweeping across the grey sky on a long diagonal. You lift your hand, not to wave, but to turn with them.
