Blue and purple mandala on a shoulder
Geometric · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large mandala design with petal-shaped segments and a lotus-like centre covers the top of the shoulder and upper arm. The fine lines are built from detailed geometric patterns, with stippled areas and repeated diamond motifs. The ink fades from blue on the left to purple on the right, and the skin is shown in soft, even light against a plain pale background.

The snow sealed the pass before four, and by dusk the Tallow Inn was a lamp sitting in a white bowl. You have spent the afternoon drying wet gloves on the range rail and counting spoons for Mrs Ardagh, who says the number is always wrong in a snowfall and always right by spring. The kettle has been on since noon.

Upstairs, in the room over the scullery, a traveller has left a sheet of tracing paper on the washstand. A circle of petals is drawn on it in blue biro, each petal ruled into fine bands, with a small diamond at every join and a lotus pressed into the middle like a seal. Mrs Ardagh says a lacemaker left it, a woman who walked up from the valley each winter to sell patterns and never once paid for a bed. You carry it down to the table and hold it against the lamp.
You copy it until your fingers stop feeling the pen. Somewhere past three the stove ticks and settles, and you add a second ring of petals, then a third, pressing harder on the diamonds so they come up as dots. When the window over the ridge turns from black to a bruised violet, you look down and see the outer petals have gone soft at the edges, blue at the rim and purple toward the centre, as if the dawn were already working inward through the paper.
Mrs Ardagh finds you asleep with your cheek on the table and the pen still in your hand. She reads the sheet without a word, then goes to the window. Below, the road is open again, a clean pale line falling away to the valley. She folds your drawing into your coat pocket. Take it down, she says. You've already drawn the way.
