Polynesian tribal shoulder and chest piece
Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo covers the upper arm, shoulder and part of the chest, filling the skin with bold tribal patterns. The design includes a large circular sun-like motif with radiating bands, alongside dense geometric and spiral panels. Solid black linework and fills dominate, with the bands of pattern giving a strong contrast against the skin.

Nobody in Porthallow thought the bakery needed a second oven, but Ana Latu had never let a sum argue with her. By four each morning the sea was still black beyond the breakwater, and I was already feeding the old brick hearth with split ash while she rolled dough on the marble slab as if it had insulted her mother.

She had a dented bronze sun she called the clock, salvaged from her father's boat along with a coil of wet rope. Its rays were cut in bands, with a spiral at the centre, and nailed above the back door where she could see it from the proving shelves. Every morning she tapped it with a floury knuckle before lighting the first tray. 'It tells the oven when to wake,' she said. I thought she was teasing until the winter the electric timer failed, and she still knew the sunrise to the minute.
The day the trawlers came in late, the bread went out warm to the fishermen's wives waiting at the harbour wall. Ana stood in the doorway wiping her hands and watched the light climb behind the lighthouse. The bands of the sun threw grey stripes across the flagstones, sharp as a stencil. She broke the first loaf, gave me the heel, which was always the best part, and said nothing about the years she had kept the ovens hot for men who never came home.
Now I keep that dented sun above my own door. When I tap it with a knuckle before the first tray, I cannot tell whether I am waking the oven or asking the morning to hurry.
