Blue feather on a lower leg

Fine line · Calf · Colour · Photo

A single feather is tattooed on the lower leg, angled from the lower left to the upper right of the frame. The feather is drawn with fine, flowing linework and softer blue shading that suggests the barbs and a lighter central quill. The ink is a bright royal blue against pale skin, with the dark background framing the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wind off the Fens had got under the big top by ten, and Hal Tranter was still chasing a dropped ticket book across the grass when the feather came down in front of him, turning over and over as if it had somewhere to be. He caught it against his chest. It was blue as the gas flame under the brew kettle, with a quill so fine he could see the sky through the barbs.

Nobody on the fair kept birds. Mrs Pryce on the waltzer had a parrot once, but it died in Skegness and she still wouldn't say its name. Hal turned the feather over and found nothing to explain it, only a faint smell of cold rain and hot sugar from the candyfloss van.

He pinned it inside the lid of the strongman's cash box, meaning to ask around at the next stop. Then the generator failed at Spalding, the lights went out across the whole midway, and in the dark the feather lifted off the felt, drifted past his face and slipped out through the open flap of the tent.

Ten years on, he still drives the same flatbed from town to town. Every October, when the wind swings round to the east, he opens the cash box, checks the felt, and says nothing to the lads about it.
