Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink feather quill angles diagonally across the wrist, with its nib resting on a faint trailing stroke and a few small dots beneath it. The linework is fine and the feather vane is partly shaded with grey to show texture. The image is in black and grey against pale skin, with a dark green wall behind the arm.

Mrs Ada Penhale wrote letters for the men of Porthkerrow who could not write their own. By the hard winter the herring failed, she had filled more envelopes than the post office had stamps, and each evening the men came up the harbour steps smelling of tar and bait to stand at her kitchen table while she dipped the goose quill and waited.

Most of what they wanted was simple. Tell her the boat is sound. Tell him the rent is paid. Tell the girl in Plymouth that I am not drinking. Ada wrote it all in the same neat hand, and never once let on that she could hear the lies folded inside the sentences.
Then Tom Rowse came in with his cap crushed in both fists. The Morwenna had lost her mast in a squall off the Lizard, and his brother had gone north for work at the sail lofts. He could not say what he wanted to say. The lamp hissed. At last he asked her to write that the gulls were still walking the wet sand at the cove, and that he would be back before they stopped. Ada did not ask what it meant. She wrote it as he spoke, every word, and let the line trail off where his voice had.
When the envelope was sealed she sat for a while with the quill resting across her palm. Down in the harbour a hull knocked against the wall, steady as a clock. She dipped the nib once more and, out of habit, let three small dots fall on the blotter beneath the last line, the way the gulls had printed the sand that morning.
