Blue flowers behind the ear
Botanical · Neck · Colour · Photo
A close-up of a tattoo on the neck behind an ear, showing a vertical cluster of three blue flowers with yellow-green centres and green leaves. Black linework forms thin stems that curve up and down alongside the flowers. The petals are shaded in light and dark blue, and the figure is set against dark hair and skin tones.

Old Mrs Abara at the fuel stop says they only open for a week before the wind takes them. She says her mother pressed a handful inside the family Bible and the blue held for forty years. I told her I'd believe that when I saw a Bible with a pressed flower in it that wasn't mine. She laughed and gave me a coffee I hadn't paid for.
I pulled the van onto the shoulder this morning, the one with the broken tailgate, and walked out. The stems were wet and dark where the sun hadn't reached them, and they curled round my ankles as if they wanted to be carried. I picked three. I'm sending one pressed flat in this envelope, so mind the crease. The other two are in a jar on the dashboard, going the colour of old ink.
Come out in spring if you can. Bring the good camera. I'm not asking you to forgive the Christmas business, only to stand in the blue with me for an afternoon before the wind comes. Love, Frances
