Bird and magnolia branch across a back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A blue bird with outstretched wings flies beside a branch that bears large pink magnolia flowers and several buds, with a second bloom at the lower left. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft gradients on the petals and feathers and fine lines on the twigs. The tattoo spans the upper and mid back, with the person's hair visible at the top right and the rest of the skin shown bare.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bird would not land, however long the gardener's boy stood under the magnolia with his palms held open. Queen Ysolde's orchard had flowered early that year, three hundred trees splitting their grey wood into pink cups before a single leaf had come out. Old Maro said the cold would return by midsummer and the blossoms would brown on the branch. The boy said nothing. He had seen the blue bird first on the eastern wall, and it had looked at him as though it already knew his name.

Each morning it came back to the same bough, the one leaning out over the millrace, and each morning he climbed to find a bud he had missed the day before, opening slowly beside the bird's grey feet. He began to bring crumbs of bread and then drops of honey on his thumb. On the ninth morning the bird took the honey, and a knot of shouting men came up the lane, sent by the queen, who wanted every rare thing in her kingdom in a gilded cage. Their nets were already unrolled between the trees.

That night the frost came down hard over the orchard, the first in weeks. The boy went out with a lantern and a pruning knife and cut every cord he could reach, and the nets sagged into the grass like wet laundry. In the morning the men blamed the wind. The queen blamed Maro. The boy climbed to the old bough with his breath smoking and found the bird waiting there, its wings half open, as though it had only been resting before a long flight.

Spring came back the following year with the blossoms early again. A single blue feather was caught in the bark of the millrace bough, and beneath it the boy had tied a loop of red thread around a bud no bigger than a thumbnail. He never told anyone why that tree flowered best of all.
