Blue lotus mandala on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A lotus flower in a mandala style fills the forearm, with layered petals, inner teardrop shapes and scrollwork in the centre. The linework is fine and even, with stippled dotwork shading across the petals and two small dots hanging below the design. The ink is a single teal-blue tone against pale skin, set against a plain light wall.

Dear Nell,

The lamp man came up the row again on Tuesday with the new lamps, and he asked after you, which I did not expect. Mrs Pryce has taken your old chair by the range and will not give it back, so I sit on the stool and mend the stockings. Mum's blue jug is still on the dresser where you left it, with the crack down the side that she always said would let the milk out. It hasn't.

The pit sent word that the lower galleries are closed until the spring. Dad says it is the water, not the roof, but he has said that before. In the evenings I have been drawing on the back of the rent book, the same flower over and over, the way you used to draw them on my hand with the blue pencil from the Co-op. Petals in rings, teardrops nested inside the petals, little curls of scroll filling the middle until you can't see where one stops. Mr Ashby at chapel says the old stories have a flower that opens on still water, though I don't suppose chapel would approve of me knowing that. Anyway, I did one on the wall above the sink. It took four nights and the damp got into the corner, but it's there.

I couldn't decide what the two dots underneath were for. Then I thought they might be you and me, each one waiting to see if the other will come up the road. So I've left them as they are.

Come home when the galleries open. Or don't, but write, so I know the post still runs.

Your loving sister, Ada
