Eye and hands with sunburst on the back of a hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line tattoo on the back of a hand and wrist shows an open eye inside a sunburst of radiating lines, with two outlined hands cupping either side beneath it. A small sun or circle sits above the eye, with a star and dots below the hands and a few tiny marks along the wrist. The linework is thin and black with no shading or colour, set against a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody on the seventeenth floor believed the lift would be fixed before Christmas, so I climbed the stairs with Mrs Okafor's shopping bags looped over my wrists and the sun still hanging low over the car park. Eleven floors in, the strip lights had died on every landing except the one with the broken window, where the light came in orange off the gasworks and lay across the concrete like something spilt.

Her son Tobi was waiting on the top step. He had his grandad's drawing in his hand, the one of the eye, done in biro on the back of a council letter. Mrs Okafor had told me that her husband drew it the year they moved into Brackenfield, when the first flats still smelt of paint and nobody had yet learned which stairwell to avoid. He called it the watcher, and said it kept the sun and the stars in the same place so nobody got lost between them.

Tobi held it up to the window. "It's not finished," he said. "The hands are wrong."

I took the paper. The hands were cupped under the eye as if they were holding water. Below them someone had scratched a row of dots, and a little star, and beside it two words he had never finished spelling. I told him that hands were hard, that my own had never managed a good palm, and he laughed, and for a moment the landing felt like the bottom of a well with the sky visible at the top.

We sat there until the orange light went grey. Then Tobi took a biro from his pocket, bent over the letter, and began copying the eye again, slowly, the way you learn anything you intend to keep.
