A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maren Tollick had been hired to paint a floor, not a sky, and the chamberlain reminded her of it every morning when she came up the hill with her pots of indigo and ground chalk. She began at the centre with one dot, no bigger than a lentil. She mixed that teal from the last of the river clay, because nothing else in Oss would hold its colour through a wet winter.

Then came the rings. She laid a ring of small stops around the dot, then a ring of petals, each one edged with a double line, the way her grandmother had crimped the rims of bread. People came up to watch. A baker brought figs and sat on the step. A boy tried to count the dots and lost his place at forty. The chamberlain stopped complaining once the petals began to open across the tiles like something that had decided to bloom out of season.

In the eleventh month the queen's younger sister came up to the bathhouse and asked why the pattern never ended. Maren said a mandala was a map of the inside of one breath, and you could only finish it by sitting still long enough to hear your own. The sister sat on the cold floor for an hour and said nothing. Then she stood, went down the hill, and came back with a brush wrapped in cloth.

On the last morning of the thaw, the chamberlain found two small blue handprints beside the outermost petal, which was still bare and waiting. Maren looked at them for a long time, then left them where they were.
