Mandala tattoo on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a symmetrical mandala of layered petals around a central circle with radiating lines. Fine black linework outlines the design, and stippled dot shading gives the petals and ring details depth. Only black ink and grey tones are used, and the design fills most of the forearm against a blurred background.

The dahlia had been sulking since June, and Mrs Hollis said so every morning while she tied in the canes. Saturday was the church show, and the judge, Mr Ferrier, had already walked the beds twice with his clipboard, muttering about symmetry the way other men muttered about the weather. She was ready to give up on the back row until she found the seedling in the greenhouse, half hidden behind the tomatoes, from a packet Arthur had bought at the Norwich seed fair the year before he died.

It had opened overnight. Each petal sat exactly where the last one ended, in rings that narrowed toward a centre so tight it looked stippled, as if someone had worked it with the finest nib in the drawer. The spokes ran out from the middle like the ones on the cartwheel Arthur had hung above the bench, and the outer ring curled back on itself the way the lead on his old drawings used to. She stood in the wet grass with the secateurs in her apron pocket and thought of the rules on the entry card: one bloom, named, staked, no more than a day old.
She cut it at first light, dew still on the tips, and laid it on a square of wet muslin in the trug. At the hall, Mr Ferrier turned it over twice and found nothing to mark down. Then he frowned at the card, which had no variety name because she had not known one to write.
She picked up the pencil from the trestle and wrote Arthur's Wheel in her careful schoolroom hand. He grunted, ticked the box, and gave it the red rosette. By the time the tea urn was boiling, the wasps had found the centre, and nobody had the heart to shoo them off.
