Blue monarch butterfly on the top of a foot

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A large butterfly with blue wings, black veining and rows of white spots across the wing edges, shown in a three-dimensional style. The wings are shaded in several blues with soft purple shadowing beneath, and the thin black body and antennae sit between the upper and lower wings. The butterfly fills most of the frame against pale skin, with the tattoo angled diagonally across the top of the foot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maren, you will not believe what came through the doors of Ward 7 at ten past three last night. Not a patient, not a porter with a trolley, but a butterfly, a big blue monarch of the sort we used to chase across the allotment with jam jars. Mr Dunmore in bay two swore it was a kite that had come loose from somewhere, until it landed on the handrail by the sluice room and he saw the black veins and the white dots along the edges, each one as neat as a full stop.

Nobody wanted to shoo it out. Night shift has a way of making small things loud, and this one was so quiet it felt like a message left on the desk. It opened and closed its wings slowly, the purple shadow beneath them catching the strip light, and I found myself holding my breath each time they folded. Dr Hollis came past with her clipboard and stopped too. For two minutes the four of us stood in a corridor that smells of hand gel, watching a thing that had no business being there in February.

At four the lights in the sluice flickered, and it lifted off the rail and circled the bay twice, low over the empty chairs. I walked to the end window and eased the catch open. It took its time. It drifted out over the car park, where the sodium lamps turn everything the colour of weak tea, and I watched until I could no longer tell it from the dark.

I went back to the obs chart with my pen still cold from the air. In the notes box I wrote: butterfly, 04:12, left by window, everyone well. It is the only entry I have made all year that made me smile. Come for Sunday lunch and I will show you the page.
