Three blue butterflies on a shoulder blade

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

Three blue butterflies, one large and two smaller, appear to hover across the skin, each casting a soft black shadow beneath it. The wings show detailed veining, white spots and smooth blue gradients, while the bodies and antennae are finely drawn in black. Blue ink dominates the design, and the heavy black shading gives it a three-dimensional effect against the pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind the step, the third one's gone, and keep your hand off the wall where the ivy has got in. Sit down on that fallen block. You want the tale of the three blue moths? The English call them butterflies now, but my grandmother said they were souls who had given up on being heavy.

The lord of this keep was called Aldous Harrow, and he sold his daughters' dowries to buy grain the year the river failed. His daughter Maud kept the books when he could no longer read them. That autumn three blue wings came drifting over the well, one large and two small, blue as the glaze on a Staffordshire jug. Every one of them cast a shadow on the flagstones beneath it, a shadow so black and soft that the castle folk swore the shadows weighed more than the things that made them. Aldous saw gold in them, and he set his men to nets.

They caught the largest one at dusk. When they lifted the net, it held only a black smudge like coal dust, and the blue wing sat on the sill of the solar, opening and closing as if it were thinking. Maud took the net from her father's hands, cut the cords with the kitchen knife, and threw open the shutters. Anything that leaves its shadow behind, she said, is free to fly. The three rose over the curtain wall with the light on them, and the shadows stayed behind on the cobbles, pinned to the yard like dropped washing.

Look up at that broken arch. See how the light lies on the stones there, and how the dark pools beneath it? That is where they left their dark. Aldous is under the bramble by the chapel, and nobody has managed to catch one of the moths since.
