Blue seahorse with bubbles on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A seahorse curls upwards with a blue and teal body, black outlines and a curled tail, surrounded by small outlined bubbles. The linework is bold and the colour is flat with simple highlights rather than soft shading. The tattoo sits on the forearm against a red background, with a striped red and white top visible at the edge of the frame.

The seahorse was still curled round the crab line when Dilys Pengelly hauled it over the gunwale, and she swore it had been looking at her. Blue as a mackerel's back, with a tail wound tight as a watch spring, it hung from the hook and blew a single bubble that caught the morning light and burst against the wood. Dilys had fished Porth Vean for forty-one years and had never once seen a seahorse outside a schoolroom book.

She carried it up the slip in a bucket of seawater, past Hal Trewin mending nets and the chapel wall where the gulls queued for scraps. Hal wanted to sell it to the aquarium in Newquay. Dilys said no. Every time someone spoke, the creature turned its head toward the open water, and a thing that obviously wanted to go home deserved to be asked first.
On the Friday she rowed it out past the Gull Rock herself, the bucket knocking against her knees. She tipped the water over the side slowly, the way her mother had taught her to release a berried lobster. The seahorse hung in the green for a moment, rolled one eye at her, then drifted down toward the kelp with a string of bubbles trailing after it like a thank-you note.
Hal asked that evening what she had done with the bucket. Dilys told him she had returned it, and that the crab line was still in the drawer if he wanted to ask her anything else. He did not. The next morning she found a blue glass bead on her windowsill, smooth as a pebble, and she kept it there, because it seemed only fair that the sea should owe her something back.
