Blue seahorse tattoos on two index fingers

Hand · Colour · Photo

The photograph shows two hands held side by side, each with a blue seahorse tattoo running along the index finger from the knuckle to the fingertip. The seahorse is outlined in blue with darker blue blocks shaded along its body and a textured, spiky crest on its head. The two designs are mirror images of each other against lightly lit skin and a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pool under Gull Stack emptied twice a day, and Mabel Pengelly had never once been late to it. She went down the slick steps with a bucket on her hip while the tide was still making up its mind, because her sister Ruth had gone to Penzance to be married and nobody else in Porthkennack knew how to read the water.

Between the weed and the barnacles lived a pair of seahorses that had come in on a spring tide and stayed. They hung upright like two pencil strokes someone had started and forgotten to finish, and they never once swam apart. Mabel called them Left and Right, which her father thought the least imaginative thing he had ever heard, until he watched them turn together when a gull's shadow slid across the rock.

The summer the harbour wall was rebuilt, the pool was drained for a week. Mabel found Left stranded in a crack, its crest gone pale and dry. She carried it out in her cupped palm, the way you'd carry a wasp out of a kitchen, and set it back among the fronds. That evening Right came along the stone wall, nosing through the wet green, and found its partner by the salt on the rock, or so she told herself.

She still goes down at low water. The pair are older now, or they are the same pair, and nobody in the village can say which. When she kneels and lowers her hands into the cold, both of them turn to face her, and the surface holds two reflections perfectly still, each the other's mirror.
