Blue watercolour wave on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a single curling wave with a dark blue crest, white foam highlights and trailing teal and blue ripples that extend along the forearm. The linework is soft and broken, and the shading blends into washes of colour that give a painted, watercolour look. The forearm is photographed against a blurred wooden background, with the wave centred across the width of the arm.

Old Maren kept the lamp burning on the north skerry the winter her son's boat failed to come back through the tide-race. The islanders said the sea had taken him, as it took most things, and they left dried fish on her step and mended her nets without asking. She did not believe them. Each evening at the turn of the water she walked down to the shingle and sat with her back to the village, watching the long swell roll in out of the grey.

On the ninth night a wave rose out of the flat calm, dark at its crest, its lip trimmed with foam like the frayed edge of a sail. It did not break on the stones. It leaned over the harbour wall as if searching for someone, then drew back and laid a single wet thread of teal weed at her feet. Beyond it a line of ripples ran off along the beach like a path, and the path kept its shape even as the water pulled away from it.
She followed the ripples across the sand flats, where the sea had never shown ground before. Her knees ached and the stones turned under her boots, but the path held until she reached a boat lying on its side with her son's name burned into the transom and a crab sitting in the bow as though it owned the place. When she set her hands to the gunwale the wave gave one slow heave beneath the hull, and the boat rocked upright.
When the tide came back, it carried the boat up the shingle and set it down at her feet. In the bilge lay his oilskin, folded square, with a scrap of paper tucked into the collar. It said only: Gone round the skerry. Keep the lamp lit. Maren climbed the cliff path that night and lit it, and she kept it lit every night after, though the sea never brought him back to the shore.
