Blue wave tattoo on a forearm

Japanese · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A curling wave with a crest of white spray is tattooed on the forearm, its body formed by layers of blue and grey shading. The linework is soft and the shading gives the water depth and movement, with the wave tapering to thin trails at both ends. The background is a blurred warm brown wooden surface, which keeps attention on the tattoo.

Dear Ruth, the pump at Saltings went quiet on Tuesday, so I finally have time to write properly. The sea wall is holding for now, though Okonedo says the north gate won't last another winter. This morning I walked out past the old harbour steps with the ledger under my arm, counting the marker posts the water has swallowed since spring. Eleven now. The gulls don't mind. They sit on what's left of the railings as if they've paid for the view.

Yesterday I saw the wave. I know how that sounds. It rose off the Brinkley shelf, a blue-grey curl as tall as the chapel roof, and its crest was all white spray, lifting in pieces like someone shaking out a sheet. It did not break. For one held breath it leaned over the town with thin trails of water streaming from both ends, and then it sank back into itself as if it had remembered something. Mr Hale from the survey crew swears the gauges logged nothing. I told him the gauges were never up on the wall at dawn.

My grandmother used to say the sea keeps a ledger and only ever reads the last line. I don't believe that, but I copied the bearing into the margin, and I drew the curl the way she taught me, shadow first and light after, so the water looks like it is still deciding which way to go. I've put the sketch in this envelope. Keep it somewhere dry.

Come up before the spring tides if you can. Bring the good thread and Father's compass. If the wave comes again I want someone beside me who will see it without asking whether it was real. Yours in salt and ink, Mae.
