Botanical flower tattoos on two thighs
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare legs are shown side by side, each with a black line tattoo of flowers and stems. The left thigh has a cluster of larger open blooms with leaves and a long trailing stem, while the right has a branching stem with small buds, leaves and a fine dashed line. The ink is solid black outline with no shading, set against pale skin and a dark garment at the lower edge.

The rain has been coming sideways across Carrow Street market since six, and by ten the awnings sag like wet sails. You have stood at the bucket stall for an hour, sorting stems that someone has already sorted, because your hands need something to do while the man behind the trestle counts his coins twice. Lilies, he says, are a bad bet in weather like this. They bruise if you look at them too hard.

Mr Okonedo, who has sold cut flowers from this pitch since before the council painted the bollards yellow, pulls a bundle of campion from under a tarpaulin and presses it into your palm. Take these, he says. Nobody wants them, but they last. Behind him a faded hoarding advertises boat trips nobody takes in February. You ask what you owe him. He says he will take a cutting from the first thing you grow, and you are to bring it back in spring so he can see whether the roses have come true.
You walk home the long way, along the canal, where the white dashes down the middle of the towpath have worn away in patches. The stems drip down your sleeve and the stalks bend against your wrist. Past the lock you notice the buds have opened inside your fist, petals the colour of old paper, and that the rain has not touched them at all.
In April you bring him a pot of something that might be a rose. He turns it in his hands for a long time, then nods at the lilies you still have not bought and says the weather is turning. You should come back on Thursday.
