Peony and rose outline on thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large black linework tattoo of peonies and roses with buds, sprigs and leaves wraps across the thigh and up towards the hip. The lines are even and bold, with no shading, so the flowers read as flat outlines on the skin. The design is shown in a close crop, with white mesh underwear and a striped sleeve at the edges of the frame.

Hob Teague had carried salt over the Grey Saddle for nineteen winters, and he had never once stopped at the cairn where the old women left their offerings. He stopped that morning because his mule would not go past it. The animal planted its hooves in the snow and blew at the stones until he got down and looked.

Someone had drawn on the flat rock at the cairn's foot. The lines were dark and even, cut or inked, he could not tell which. They made a wall of roses and peonies heavy with buds, their leaves spread like open hands. There was no colour in them and no shadow. The petals were only edges, the way a child draws a flower after being told what one looks like. Hob had seen pictures like it in the valley church, and none had ever made him cold.
He knew the hand, or thought he did. Maud Pilling had gone up the pass the autumn before with a pot of ink and a needle, to mend the sheep marks on the boulders, and she had not come down. Her daughter said she had gone to draw the peonies that grew on the far side, where no peony should survive the winter. Hob had laughed at that. He did not laugh now. He scraped one bloom clean of frost with his thumbnail, and the line beneath was warm.
He walked the mule down by dusk. In the morning the valley had a new garden, a rose hedge beside every wall, and each first bud was outlined in black where the frost had been. When he tried to count them the lines shifted, the way wet ink does before it settles. Maud's daughter still tends the hedge. She says the roses flower only on the cold side of the hill, and that her mother is in every one of them, drawn in and waiting to be filled.
