Black lettering tattoos reading BRAAAP with an arrow on the back of one hand, and BRAKE and CLUTCH across the fingers of the other hand.

BRAAAP, brake and clutch lettering on hands

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are posed to form a loop. The back of one hand carries the word BRAAAP in bold black capitals, with three marks and a curved arrow with motion lines, while BRAKE is inked along one finger and CLUTCH along another. The linework is solid black with no shading or colour, and the tattoos are shown clearly against a dark grey background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dennis Pask had stalled my blue hatchback four times on the hill outside Ludlow before he shouted the word he'd been rehearsing all week. "Braaap!" he said, both hands off the wheel, which is the first thing I'd have marked him down for if I'd been the examiner. I'd taught him the words on his knuckles in the first lesson, BRAKE on one finger and CLUTCH on the other, because he kept mixing them up and I had run out of patience.

"Hands on the wheel," I said. "Clutch down, brake, then the gear, then let the clutch come up like you're waking a sleeping dog." He did it. The car rolled back two feet towards a hedge full of nettles, and he laughed so hard he nearly lifted his foot off the pedals altogether. Ten minutes later the hatchback was crawling up the hill in second with a noise I'd call honest. It wasn't braaap. It was a grumble with ambition.

His mum rang on the Wednesday night to ask whether he'd be all right on Thursday. I said he would, provided he remembered that arrows point forward and that his fingers were not a sat nav. She asked what that meant. I said I'd explain on Thursday.

On Thursday the examiner sat in the back with a clipboard, and Dennis pulled away from the kerb as smooth as milk poured from a jug. At the junction by the church he sat up, checked his mirror, and said braaap to himself, very quietly, the way you'd thank a dog for not biting.
