Matching script wrist tattoos on clasped hands
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together against a pale background, with a dark jacket sleeve visible at the top left. Each wrist carries a line of black script lettering, rotated from this camera angle, with the right wrist reading from the top of the frame. The image is monochrome, with soft shading on the skin and a plain light background that keeps the focus on the tattoos.

Nobody buys a ring on a wet Thursday in March, so Mrs Okafor and I were the only two left under canvas at the bottom of Brackley Street when the rain came sideways off the river. She sold secondhand umbrellas from a trestle table. I sold cheap pearl brooches and a tin of tired teaspoons. We had shared that corner for eleven years and never once argued about the gutter.

A young couple came splashing down the row just before four, sharing a single umbrella that had already turned inside out. He asked whether I did lettering. I said I did price tickets, which made her laugh, and then he showed me a phrase written in biro on the back of a bus ticket. He wanted it split across two wrists, so that neither half made sense alone and you would have to lift both hands together to read it whole.
I told him it would take a steady hand and a clear morning. He said they had waited years for a clear morning and were tired of waiting. Mrs Okafor, who had been listening from behind her stacks, pressed a black umbrella into his hands for nothing and said the rain would stop when it was ready. It did not stop. They walked off under her gift with their fingers laced, and the ticket stayed behind on my stall.
The next Thursday was dry for once. I found the ticket still pinned under a brooch, the biro gone blurry from the wet, and I read the two halves aloud across the gutter. Mrs Okafor said they sounded like a promise and a warning at once. I said that was the trouble with a sentence you could only read with both hands. Across the road a tram bell rang, and somewhere behind us an umbrella snapped open in the sun.
