Brushstroke serpent dragon on the ribs

Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A long, serpentine dragon with a horned head curls across the skin, its body formed from sweeping black and dark purple strokes that taper at the tail. Soft blue wash sits along the body and fine pink and magenta splashes trail from the head and along the right side, giving a painterly, loose finish. The design is centred on the skin with plenty of space around it, and the ink appears crisp against the pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mara had been painting the lamp room railings for two days when the sea began to move wrong. Off the point, a long swell rose in the grey and folded back on itself, black where the water was deep and blue where the shallows caught the light, and it kept its shape far longer than any wave had a right to. Her father, who had kept the Skerrow light for thirty-one years before his hands went, would have called it a sea serpent and sent her to bed.

She climbed to the gallery with the brush still in her fist. The lens turned above her, throwing its white beam across the rocks, and each time it swept over the creature it showed more of it: a horned head lifted from the swell, a body coiling back through the surf in long dark strokes that thinned to nothing at the tail. Pink spray flew from its jaw and caught the lamp's glow like sparks off a forge.

Mara had her grandmother's sketchbook in her coat. Inside, in faded pencil, were the same curves, and beneath them a line in a language nobody on the island spoke any more: keep the light and the light keeps you.

She didn't wait for dawn. She trimmed the wick, wound the clockwork, and watched the thing settle back under the water like ink soaking into paper. By morning the sea was flat and ordinary. Only a smear of blue lay along the rocks, drying pale in the sun, and the keeper's log for that night read simply: sea quiet, light true.
