Pink and purple abstract strokes on a wrist

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A close photograph of a tattoo on the inner forearm near the wrist. It shows a loose trail of pink, magenta and purple shapes that sweep upwards, with blue accents and small scattered yellow and red dots. The shapes have soft, painterly edges with little black linework, and the design sits against plain skin with a dark background at the edges of the frame.

Mrs Pell came up from the village yesterday with her grandson and a bag of lemons. She stood at the lamp room door and asked whether it was true the light had been dark for a week. I told her it had not, not really, only that I had been up the tower every night painting the glass so the beam would throw red and violet out over the water, the way the sea looks when the sun goes behind Harrow Head. She said her husband had always wanted that. I did not tell her I had made it up as I went along.

The last of the ferries took your letter with it, the one saying you would not be back before the herring run. I have pinned it to the wall beside the tide tables. In the morning I will go down with the small brush and a dish of ochre, and I will set the blue strokes flying off the cliff path where the wind always catches the gorse, so that when you come home there will be a trail of colour leading you up from the landing stage.

Your loving sister, Ada
