Buck heart and quote on a thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo on the upper thigh shows a solid buck silhouette with antlers set inside an outlined heart shape. Beneath it, a line of black hand-lettered text reads 'ducks, trucks and 8 point bucks thats what little boys are made of' in a mix of upper and lower case. The shading is solid black with no greys, and the photo is taken straight on with denim shorts visible at the top of the frame.

The hatch on Ledger Deck groaned open at the wrong hour, and you knew before you turned round that the boy from Ward Nine had come for the hauling rig again. He was nine, all elbows, with a grease smear on his cheek the shape of a thumb. 'Ducks, trucks and eight point bucks,' he said, reciting it the way the old hydroponics crew used to chant it over the vat pumps, then grinned as if he had won an argument.

Nobody aboard the Hesper had seen a live deer. The herd was a rumour kept alive by the seed archive, a few grainy frames and a printed sheet pinned above the galley sink. Your grandmother had burned the buck and heart into the hatch frame of your cabin with a heated stylus, the antlers curling so far they nearly touched the rim. She said the shape meant you kept what you loved inside the outline and let the rest run wild. You thought it was nonsense until the boy came asking for parts.
So you gave him a gasket and a lesson. Bolt the lever first, then the sling, then check the tension against the pale line on the gauge. He worked with his tongue between his teeth while the recycler hummed through the bulkhead. When the cable finally sang true he looked up at you with the face of someone who had just been handed the sky.
Three days later the rig dragged a sealed crate of soil up from the lower ring, and the boy rode on top of it like a bronc. You didn't stop him. Somewhere under the deck plates a pump kicked on, and the heart on your hatch seemed, for once, to be full.
