Script quote across the upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a two-line quote in black script lettering, with A Love on the upper line and Thicker Then Blood below it. The strokes are solid black with a slight shadow edge, and the tattoo is shown in black ink only. The lettering fills the frame horizontally across the upper back, and the surrounding skin is red and inflamed, which suggests the tattoo is recent.

Dear Nell,

The relief boat didn't come on Thursday, so it has been eleven days with only Mr Pryce and me on the Skerry. The lamp has not once gone dark, whatever the weather has tried. The wind took the cowl off the ventilator and sent it into the sea like a hat. I keep the log in pencil now, because ink runs when the spray gets in.
Pryce is not my brother, and you always said that was the trouble with him. He sat up with me the night the gallery glass cracked, holding the torch while I puttied it with a spoon. He reads the tide tables aloud in a parson's voice. When the damp got into my chest he rubbed Dr Lowe's liniment into my back until his knuckles bled, and he told me it was a love thicker than blood. He said it with a grin, as though the phrase had only just occurred to him and he was pleased with it.
Last night he took a nail to the inside of the lamp-room door and scratched the words in, with the spelling of a man who never trusted a dictionary. I asked him to correct it. He said Then would do for a rock that couldn't read, and that the sea wouldn't mind. I have left it as it is.
When the boat finally comes, tell Mrs Hale the lamp is trimmed and the log is up to date. Tell her the door says what it says.
