Butterfly and ribbon on a foot
Other · Mixed · Photo
A pink and black butterfly tattoo covers the top of a bare foot, with its wings spread outward and a pink ribbon looping through the centre. The wings use black fill with white speckles and pink-purple panels, with soft shading across the ribbon. The warm skin tone and dark, reflective surface behind the foot frame the colourful design.

The butterfly came aboard off the Dogger Bank, two days out of Grimsby, when the nets were coming up full of nothing but sprat and the wind had dropped to a whisper. Skipper Alf swore it was a moth. I said a moth wouldn't have the nerve to come that far from land, and he said that was the trouble with butterflies, they had no sense at all.

It sat on the rail beside the winch with its wings closed, black as tarred rope and speckled white like a sky seen through a bad window. When it opened them there was a stripe of pink along each wing, and knotted through its middle was a ribbon, faded to the colour of old rhubarb, that someone must have tied on the quay. Cook reckoned it had blown off a bride's car at the harbour gate. I thought it had come from the pier end, where Ruth used to stand waving whenever the fleet went out.
For three days it rode with us. It ate nothing we could find and kept to the wheelhouse roof, lifting off each time the engine note changed. On the fourth morning fog came down so thick the bow disappeared, and we heard the harbour bell only in our heads. Alf held his hand out over the rail and the butterfly stepped onto his knuckle, ribbon trailing, as calmly as a man laying down a card.
We reached the Humber at slack water. When the fog lifted it was gone, and the ribbon lay coiled on the wet deck like a spent rope end. I pocketed it. Ruth always said the sea kept what it wanted and gave back the rest, and I have never decided which kind of thing this was.
