Butterfly and vine tattoo on a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A butterfly with shaded grey wings sits on the top of a foot, with thin dark vines curling out from either side and small leaf shapes at their tips. The linework is fine and clean, with soft grey shading across the wings and body. The image is in natural colour, with the pale skin and tattoo shown against a dark plastic-covered surface and a wooden background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bean vine had put out its third curl by the time the fog came down over the Bay, and Nell Corrigan was still scolding it for leaning toward the porthole. "You'll drown in salt air," she told it, pinching a yellowed leaf off the tin bucket. Behind her the stockpot ticked as it cooled, and the bread proving under its damp cloth had begun to sag the way it always did when the ship rolled.

The butterfly arrived at four bells in the morning watch, pale-winged and dusty, clinging to the frame of the hatch as if it had walked straight out of the fog. Tomas from the deck crew swore it was a bad sign and wanted it swatted. Nell told him the sea had never once cared what anyone believed, and that a thing that small had come a long way to find warm bread. She set a saucer of sugared water on the chopping block and went back to the onions.

It stayed three days. It kept to the galley, lifting from the rail when the pans clattered and settling again on the vine, where its wings opened and shut as slow as breathing. By the time the coast of Galicia dropped behind them the vine had two new tendrils reaching for the copper hooks, and Nell had stopped pretending she didn't talk to either of them.

At Rotterdam the crane swung the containers out over the quay, and the hatch stood open to the morning. Nell lifted the bucket onto the sill and waited. The butterfly rose once, turned a slow circle above the vine's green curls, and sailed out into the cold grey light of the harbour, leaving her with a bucket of leaves and nothing left to scold.
