Purple butterfly on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A purple butterfly with black-edged wings and white spots is shown in profile, with one wing angled upward and the other held lower. The wings use layered purple tones with soft grey-black shading that gives a raised, three-dimensional effect, and a dark shadow sits beneath the body. The tattoo is centred on a forearm against a black leather chair.

Dad never trusted a garden that grew without permission, so when the buddleia by the shed went wild that August, he handed me the secateurs and told me to have it back in shape by teatime. I was halfway through the second branch when the butterfly came down on the cut stem, folding and unfolding its purple wings as though it had been waiting for someone to notice it.

It was a bold one, black-edged, with white spots scattered along the rims as if someone had flicked a paintbrush across them. What caught my eye was the shadow. It lay on the gravel beneath the bush, dark and soft at the edges, and it sat lower than the insect ever did, as if the butterfly was hovering a finger's width above the world and the ground was slow to admit it.
I flapped a glove at it. It lifted, circled the water butt, and settled on the gate latch. When I looked down again the shadow was still there on the path, pooled under nothing at all. Dad shouted from the kitchen window to leave the thing alone, so I did, and by evening I had laid a row of slate tiles around the grey patch, the way you would fence off a sleeping dog.
In the morning the tiles had been nudged aside and the shadow had drifted to the gate, where the purple wings were drying in the first sun. Dad stood beside me with his tea and said nothing for a long while. Then he went back inside and came out with Mum's old trowel, the one with the cracked handle, and pressed it into my hand. Some things, he said, you don't cut back. You just make room.
