Butterfly tattoo on the chest

Traditional · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A large black and grey butterfly tattoo sits centrally on the chest, with bold outlines, solid black fills and ornate circular detailing across the wings. The shot is a close crop from the chest to the waist against a dark background, with flower tattoos partly visible on the upper arms.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been grinding lampblack since the lamp smoke turned your fingers the colour of wet slate, and the old painter Lysandros says the best black is the one that runs from the brush without a sound. He does not look up when you set the bowl beside his palette. Outside the window the harbour road is loud with mule carts and somebody singing badly about a fishmonger's daughter.

Today he is painting a butterfly onto a shield cover for a merchant's son, and he wants the eyes on its wings to look as if they could blink. He draws the outline first with a reed, then works the black into the forewings in quick bands. Each ring of dots he makes with the blunt end of a bone stylus, turning it the way a potter turns a wheel, and every one must match the last or the merchant will notice and refuse to pay.

You watch the black gather at the tips of the wings, where his hand has lingered too long. He swears and reaches for a rag, but you tell him to leave them. A young man who carries a shield like that will be seen from across the agora, and being seen is exactly what his father is paying for. Lysandros grunts, which is as close to agreement as he ever comes.

By dusk the shield is drying on the sill and the wings look almost alive in the low light. You scrape the last of the soot into a clay pot and mark it with your thumbprint, as he taught you. Tomorrow someone else will grind the black. The butterfly will go down to the harbour with its eyes wide open.
